Let’s be honest: ordering custom blinds(our blinds) sounds intimidating.

Measurements. Slat sizes. Headrail types. Mounting options. It feels like you need a degree in interior design just to buy something that covers a window.

But here’s the truth: it’s not that complicated. You just need someone to walk you through it like a normal human. Let’s do that.

First: Where Can You Actually Use These?

Aluminium blinds aren’t just for one type of room. They’re actually one of the most versatile window coverings out there.

Kitchens. This is where they shine. Grease splatter? Wipe it off. Steam from cooking? No problem. Wood blinds would warp. Fabric would stain. Aluminium just keeps going.

Bathrooms. Humidity is the enemy of most window coverings. Not these. They’re waterproof, mold-resistant, and don’t care how hot your shower gets.

Living rooms. If you want clean lines and easy light control, aluminium works. You can tilt the slats to let light in while keeping privacy.

Home offices. Glare on your screen? Tilt the slats. Need privacy for video calls? Close them. Want natural light without direct sun? Partially open.

Rental properties. Landlords love these. They’re durable, easy to clean, and don’t need replacing between tenants.

Coastal homes. Salt air destroys metal. Good aluminium blinds use marine-grade alloy that won’t corrode. Perfect for beach houses.

Step 1: Measure Your Window (It’s Not Scary)

You need two numbers: width and height. That’s it.

For inside mount (blinds sit inside the window frame):

  • Measure the width at the top, middle, and bottom

  • Use the smallest number—that’s your width

  • Measure the height at left, middle, and right

  • Use the smallest number—that’s your height

For outside mount (blinds cover the whole window area):

  • Measure how wide you want coverage (usually the full window plus a few inches on each side)

  • Measure how tall you want coverage (usually full window plus a few inches top and bottom)

One tip: Measure twice. Seriously. Write it down. Then measure again. It takes three minutes and saves you from ordering the wrong size.

Step 2: Pick Your Slat Size

This is the biggest decision that nobody explains.

25mm (about 1 inch): Classic, fine-ribbed look. Best for smaller windows or traditional homes. Looks neat, controls light precisely.

50mm (about 2 inches): The standard. Works on most windows. Clean, modern, not too bold. Safe choice if you’re unsure.

63mm (about 2.5 inches): Statement size. Fewer slats, cleaner lines. Looks great on large windows or sliding doors.

How to choose: Walk across your room and look at your window. If it’s small, go smaller slats. If it’s big, go bigger. That’s the whole rule.

Step 3: Pick Your Colour

White is safe. Grey is trendy. Black is bold. But here’s what actually matters:

If your walls are white: White blinds disappear into the wall. Grey or black become a feature.

If your walls are coloured: White blinds pop and look crisp. Dark blinds blend in more.

If you’re renting or might move: Stick with white or off-white. They work in any space.

One pro tip: Order a sample. Colours look different in your home than on a website. A $5 sample saves you from a $300 mistake.

Step 4: Pick How You Want to Open and Close Them

Cord control: The classic. Pull one cord to raise and lower. Twist a rod to tilt the slats. Simple, reliable, affordable.

Wand control: No cords. Just a plastic rod you twist to tilt. Looks cleaner, safer if you have kids or pets.

Motorized: Push a button or use an app. Costs more. But if your windows are high up or hard to reach, it’s worth it.

Honestly? Most people do fine with standard cord control. It’s been working for decades.

Step 5: Decide Inside vs. Outside Mount

Inside mount: Blinds sit inside your window frame. Clean look. Shows off your window trim. Best if your window frame is deep enough (at least 5-7 cm).

Outside mount: Blinds cover the whole window area, mounted on the wall above. Good for windows that aren’t perfectly square. Also good if you want to make a small window look bigger.

Still unsure? Inside mount looks more built-in. Outside mount is more forgiving if your measurements aren’t perfect.

What You’ll Pay (Roughly)

Custom blinds cost more than off-the-shelf. But they actually fit your window.

Window SizeApproximate Range
Small (60 x 100 cm)$50–80
Medium (120 x 150 cm)$80–120
Large (200 x 200 cm)$150–250

Wider slats cost a bit more. Motorized adds $100–200. Custom colours add a bit.

But here’s the thing: a custom blind that fits perfectly lasts 10–15 years. The cheap ones from the big box store? Maybe 3–4 years if you’re lucky.

The Bottom Line

Ordering made to measure aluminium blinds sounds complicated. It’s really just:

  1. Measure your window

  2. Pick slat size that matches your window

  3. Pick a colour you like

  4. Pick how you want to open them

  5. Order and wait

That’s it. No degree required.
